Extended Access

What we do

Previously known as Extra Care, our Extended Access service supports our Gateshead GP Practices by providing GP, Healthcare Assistant, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Community Psychiatric Nurse appointments during normal working hours, in the evenings and at weekends, over 6 days a week.

We currently provide this service across three site locations in Gateshead. These are Blaydon Primary Care Centre, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Trinity Square Health Centre.

We deliver Extended Access in partnership with Primary Care Networks and practice colleagues in line with the Direct Enhanced Service (DES) requirements across the whole of Gateshead. We support and deliver system resilience in times of escalation and surge. We also work extremely closely with QE Facilities and the NHS111 service.

CQC

How does it work?

Appointments can be booked in advance or for the same day through your GP practice, and can be made for face to face or as a telephone consultation. The patient will be given the choice when they would like to book their appointment for and given information on where to attend.

These appointments may also be available by contacting NHS111 on a Saturday. If a patient requires a specialist referral following the extended access appointment, we will work in collaboration with their own GP to arrange this.

Services we can offer within the Enhanced Access are listed below:

Benefits

  • 52 weeks per year cover. No need to worry about cover for annual leave or sickness

  • Potential for increased income as all coding is to QOF standards and supports the practice DES and LES schemes

  • Increased staff capacity – reduced workload for GPs, Nurses, Practice Pharmacists, Practice Technicians and administrative staff.

  • Increased space in practice – the team work remotely from the practice freeing up valuable workspace
